We're looking for a curious, adaptable data scientist to help make Monzo as amazing as possible for all of our customers and the whole of our team.
At Monzo, we are building the best bank account in the world: fair, transparent and a pleasure to use. Our data team’s mission is to enable Monzo to operate 10x more efficiently than traditional banks, and to make our product as useful as possible for our customers.
Our journey has just begun, and we are looking for people who are passionate about changing the way the industry works and who share our values. We believe in an open, transparent, highly diverse working environment where everyone is empowered to make changes. You can get involved in any aspect of the business that you find interesting. Following Stripe’s example, all emails in the company are available for everyone to explore, and we discuss everything in Slack channels which are accessible by every member of the team. You can see more about our plans on our public product roadmap, and sneak peeks of upcoming features in our community forum.
The role
You’ll be the second person to join our Data & Analytics function, working with every team in the company, helping them to analyse and make better use of the data we gather. It’s a very varied role: you will spend some of your time monitoring and measuring our business, and you'd work on lots of exciting projects using emerging technology to make banking with Monzo feel like magic.
What you’ll work on
- Financial crime: we need to stay ahead of criminals trying to steal data and money. We’ve recently deployed our first deep learning model to predict fraudulent behaviour based on a broad range of transactional user behaviour data. You’d help us make those predictions real-time.
- Product: we’re shaping the future of banking, and you’d help our product team do this by providing timely user behaviour insights, designing and evaluating product experiments, and helping make the right decisions quickly with ad-hoc analytics.
- Marketing: we want to share what we’ve built with the world, so everyone can find out about Monzo. You’d help the marketing team design a robust source attribution model so that we’re investing our marketing pounds where they are having the biggest impact.
- Operations and customer support: we care about our customers and want them to experience frictionless banking. You'll help us take our operations to the next level by predicting potential customer queries before they happen - and building an AI assistant for customer support which suggests possible replies, surfaces all the relevant contextual information, and ensures our support team can remain fully focussed on helping people.
What’s special about data at Monzo?
Autonomy. We believe that people reach their full potential when you can remove all the operational obstacles out of their way and let them run with their ideas. This comes together with a strong sense of ownership for your projects. At Monzo, you will get full access to our data and analytics infrastructure. When you discover something interesting, there is nothing stopping you from exploring and implementing your coolest ideas.
Cutting-edge managed infrastructure. All our data infrastructure lives on the Google Cloud Platform, so you don't need to spend your time configuring or managing clusters, databases, etc. If you want to train a Machine Learning model faster, just pick 1,000 compute engine instances and submit a job from your local machine, no DevOps skills required. Want to set up a real-time stream processing pipeline? Just write Apache Beam code without caring where and how it's going to run.
Automation. We aim to automate as much as we can, so that every person in the team can focus on the things that humans do best. As with all data work, there’s some KPIs and reporting, and as much as possible we encourage self-serve access to our data through Looker and Mixpanel.
You should apply if:
- you’re happiest exploring data, making discoveries and understanding their implications
- you have a solid grounding in SQL and Python, and are comfortable using them every day
- you’re adaptable, curious and enjoy learning new technologies and ideas
- what we’re doing sounds exciting, and you can’t wait to explore our data
- machine learning interests you
- you want to become a data science superstar
We don’t expect applicants to have more than 1-2 years of experience with data science, whether through weekend curiosity, projects during education, internships or jobs.
Logistics
This role is based at our office in London, where you’ll work alongside engineers, designers, banking experts and customer support specialists to build the future of banking.
Our interview process consists of a 20-minute phone interview, a take-home test, and a half-day on-site interview. We promise not to ask you any brain teasers or trick questions, and we will not make you code on a whiteboard!
